Statistics show that approximately 82,000 people die from cancer every year in Vietnam, and 200,000 die from cardiovascular diseases, according to the Ministry of Health.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Manh Hung, Director of the Vietnam Heart Institute, spoke about the Community Reality Program in response to World Heart Day. The event was held in Taiping on September 16th in collaboration with the Vietnam National Society of Cardiology.
Associate Professor Hung said cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death and disability. According to the 2022 Global Burden of Disease Report, cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, claim 19.5 million lives. "Deaths from cardiovascular disease are more common than all three subsequent causes of death combined, including cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and diabetes" said Associate Professor Dr. Pham Manh Hung

Another worrying fact is that the death rate from cardiovascular disease is increasing in low- and lower-middle-income countries (up to 75%). According to statistics from the Ministry of Health, each year about 200,000 people die from cardiovascular disease, accounting for 33% of deaths. Meanwhile, about 82,000 Vietnamese die from cancer each year.

According to the experts, lifestyle greatly affects cardiovascular disease, in addition to other factors such as family, race, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes... Among them, there are bad habits. such as lack of exercise, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, environmental pollution, stress, and even lack of understanding or subjectivity in approaching disease prevention.

Since 2000, the World Heart Federation in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO has chosen September 29 every year as World Heart Day. This year, the theme of World Heart Day is "Use heart, know heart", emphasizing that each person should be self-aware and take care of their own heart in a good way.
"Seemingly simple actions such as propagating and instructing people not to smoke, eat less salty food, not eat a lot of animal fat, limit alcohol consumption, exercise physically, walk 10,000 steps feet every day... can help avoid at least 80% of premature deaths due to cardiovascular disease," Associate Professor Hung shared
