Diabetes can result in risky side effects including impaired or lost vision, renal failure, heart disease, and even amputation. Mr. T.V.H., 45, of Ho Chi Minh City, has long-standing type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He was just admitted to the hospital due to generalized swelling, exhaustion, and respiratory problems
His condition required the doctor to modify several medications after he was diagnosed with the consequences of chronic renal disease through examination and testing.
"I continue to take diabetes medication, although I hardly ever go back for checkups. I simply acquire expired pills to consume them, but I didn't anticipate experiencing such issues” stated Mr. H
A representative of the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control said diabetes is one of the non-communicable diseases in the world. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar levels or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
The disease can cause many dangerous complications such as cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney failure, and amputation.

Specialist Doctor 1 Tran Thi Ngoc Anh, Department of Endocrinology, Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital (HCMC) said that at the time of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, studies recorded that out of 20 patients, 2 people will encounter eye or kidney complications, 1 person had heart or blood vessel complications. These complications appear more frequently and are more severe if detected late and the disease is poorly controlled.
Retinopathy: This complication progresses silently and eventually leads to cataracts, glaucoma and eventually reduced or loss of vision.
Currently, eye complications of diabetes can only be detected through direct examination by a specialist. This should be done every 1 to 2 years and more often if abnormalities are present. Besides good blood sugar control, controlling blood fats and blood pressure also helps reduce disease progression.
Kidney disease: In addition to testing the blood creatinine index to evaluate kidney function, doctors also use the protein index in urine samples to monitor the disease. These tests are checked periodically once a year. Usually, controlling kidney complications needs to be combined with controlling blood pressure.
Cardiovascular disease: Hypertension is the most common disease in patients with diabetes. Blood pressure levels of 130/80 mmHg or higher should be evaluated by a doctor and considered for medical treatment.
In addition, vascular diseases such as coronary atherosclerosis and small blood vessels in the limbs can be detected and evaluated by echocardiography and vascular ultrasound. Among them, the most effective treatment and prevention methods are good control of blood sugar, and blood fat, weight loss, and stopping smoking.
Diabetic foot complications: This is a group of diseases related to nerve-vascular complications in the patient's feet.
The disease progresses slowly, with unclear symptoms such as numbness, cold feet, and reduced feeling in the feet when exposed to hot water or wearing shoes. When your feet have calluses, scratches, or ulcers, they are difficult to heal and can lead to many complications.
Patients need to pay attention to the signs of the disease for early detection and examination, foot care, and appropriate treatment.
Diabetes is divided into 3 types.

Type 1 diabetes: Can appear at any age, but occurs most often in children and adolescents. With type 1 diabetes, the body produces little or no insulin.
Type 2 diabetes: More common in adults and accounts for about 90% of all diabetes cases. When you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not use the insulin it produces well.
Gestational diabetes: This is a condition of hyperglycemia first detected during pregnancy
